Hi All,
I have kept quiet about this thus far but just want to bring up a couple of
points regarding the original email that Greg has sent.
As many of you may know, after several consecutive years of success since
its inception, there is no current plan for the DAANZ to run GongCon in 2006
or beyond.
Greg, you stated publicly in December last year that you wanted to organize
this event. You said that you were after encouragement from all to do this
(as well as the email tournament) and I believe that you received it for
both of them. In addition to this you also sent a message to the executive
two weeks ago saying that you would put something together in the next few
days regarding this tournament. To now say that there is no current plan for
the DAANZ to run GongGon in 2006 is a gross misrepresentation of the facts!
You are the one who put his hand up to do this publicly and to the executive
9 months ago. You were given ample opportunity to opt out of this or to
advise the diplomacy community of its running a long time ago. To blame
this tournaments demise on the executive is fucking unfair... It is the
executives responsibility to affiliate / endorse tournaments - not run /
organize them.
Rather than let this tournament fall into the abyss, and as the most active
Wollongong player remaining in the hobby, I've been thinking about taking on
the role of Tournament Director for this endangered event.
You are the only active player who lives in Wollongong. It is your
responsibility to organize this if you want it held in your home town. It is
endangered as there are no other active players in the town. It is turning
into the Wellington tournament of Australia, where the majority of players
come from out of town (mind you not saying that there are others that are
not in the same position).
To confirm that GongCon 2006 will go ahead, I require 2 things before
Tuesday the 26th of September (2 weeks time) :-
1. Official DAANZ approval and endorsement of the Diplomacy Tournament for
the purposes of both Bismark and Masterpoints.
2. At least 7 people confirm thier intention to participate in the
Diplomacy
Tournament.
Was this your official request to the executive? We were actually waiting
for you to send something through to us first before officially announcing
it.
In this particular case, and with only 3-4 people stating interest thus far,
there is some uncertainty as to whether you can get enough players - and you
can take that as a challenge to actually get them:-). At this time, I
personally, would prefer that you had a definite confirmed seven players
before this is even considered for affiliation in any way.
With regards to 2 rounds and restrictions this is something that I am not
commenting on at this particular time. I will soon though :-)
Also, with regard to growing the tournament - how do you see this happening
with only 7 players?
In addition can you confirm that the winner of the Anzac cup will actually
be present at GongCon? It would seem rather strange to promote this
tournament as the prize giving for an email tournament that only officially
concludes a week earlier. Should we be not look at a ceremony taking place
at an early tournament held next year, where you can have the presentation,
as the Bismark Cup is done? You will also be in a position to canvas for
more players for the next one (if you plan to hold it again)?
Anyway these are just my thoughts.........
GrAnT
